Stomping into the post-apocalyptic chaos of Extinction, the Dreadnoughtus is as unstoppable as its name suggests. Towering above the fray, this behemoth exudes an aura of calm that contradicts its immense power. It’s a creature that doesn’t bother with the small stuff—literally—ignoring anything beneath the size of a Spinosaur to focus its wrath on worthy adversaries. When it bellows, the air itself seems to tremble, unleashing a sound so forceful it disrupts the very essence of Element, leveling the playing field against even the fiercest Titans. If you’re preparing for war, the Dreadnoughtus is the ally you need—a towering testament to survival against the odds. The Dreadnoughtus is set to join ARK: Survival Ascended for free on December 16th, along with Extinction. It’s the fourth community-voted creature introduced in ASA. Speaking of community votes—get ready to get creative and make your voice heard again! We’ll soon begin the next creature vote to decide which prehistoric beast will roam Valguero next year. Download in full resolution We’re very happy to share that we have resolved the client stall/freeze associated with the dynamic loading of mods on consoles and this is currently going through certification with Sony and Microsoft (alongside Cryopods checks being disabled in Single Player) and we’re hoping to release this update early next week once it clears certification! In the meantime, disabling “Dynamic Downloads” in the options menu remains a workaround to avoid stalls, though it will prevent dynamically downloaded cosmetics from loading. As you may have noticed, the most recent console patch also increased the amount of mod storage space available from 20gb to 50gb on Xbox. We’re also planning to do a similar increase for PlayStation, though it likely won't be available until early next year. The storage space change requires a larger engineering lift for PlayStation, requiring some core technology updates due to some requirements so it’s going to take us a bit more time. On Xbox, the increase was just a simple value change, making it an easy choice to roll out now. We appreciate your patience and look forward to bringing this upgrade to PlayStation as soon as the technical groundwork is in place! Now onto the remaining events this year, we’ve got some good news and some not so good news. The good news is we really heard you when it comes to running events on the main game and not keeping them exclusive to Club ARK, so we’ll be adjusting our pipeline so that going forward, events will be represented in the main game and designed to work across multiple maps when possible. But, given our team’s tight schedule, this Turkey Trial will be limited in that we’ll be increasing the rates on servers and doing wild dino colors but there won’t be any existing or new content. Just to provide some additional clarity, re-using the old event from last year isn’t technically feasible without significant effort due to a refactor that took place earlier this year for the newer events, this means that there won’t be any Murder Turkeys on the ARK this year. While the Thanksgiving feast may be leaner this year, we’re cooking up something special to satisfy your holiday cravings soon so rest assured, we’re still planning on doing a Winter Wonderland event and hope to have it represented in both the base game, as well as Club ARK, with some new content, colors, and rates! We’re incredibly proud to share a special message we received from Children’s Miracle Network following this year’s Extra Life Game Day. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity and support of the ARK community, over $116,000 was raised, making Studio Wildcard the highest fundraising individual team during Game Day weekend! Together, we’ve helped make a real difference in the lives of the 12 million children and their families who rely on these hospitals every year. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without YOU, our amazing community, whose generosity and dedication inspire us every day. Thank you for tuning in and contributing to an effort we’re humbled to help facilitate. The power of gaming communities is unstoppable, and, together, we’re changing kid’s health to change the future! This weekend, the Official Network will be receiving bonus rates! It will be active until Monday, November 18. We’re blown away by the extraordinary generosity of our community during last weekend’s Extra Life charity event! Thanks to you, we’ve made a real difference together. And the excitement doesn’t stop there—a mighty new adventure that’s just around the corner! Download in full resolution ARK: Survival Ascended is bringing even more morphing action with ARK x Power Rangers Wave 2, set to release on January 23 for Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation. This exciting follow-up to the original Power Rangers mod pack introduces new heroes and villains, available as a standalone pack for $9.99. Survivors can suit up as the iconic Green and White Rangers, harness the power of the Megazord, and encounter even more legendary characters. Player Character Skins [with the signature weapons and emotes!] Green White Lord Zedd Rita Repulsa Goldar Alpha 5 PuttyCreature Zords Skins White Tigerzord Titanus Green Dragonzord Megazord We’ve got a pretty important update on Cryopods that addresses some community frustrations on both PvE and PvP. Let’s begin with PvE. We’re reverting the requirement for nearby Cryofridges when deploying Cryopods on PvE entirely. This brings back the experience to match what was on ARK: Survival Evolved. This change will come into effect on Monday, November 11th. Now for PvP. We’re not walking back all the changes for this game mode, but we will be making an adjustment. As of Monday, November 11th, we will no longer be checking to see if Enemies are in radius when deploying creatures from Cryopods (the cryofridge requirement will still remain), and we’ll be monitoring and evaluating the impact of this change and whether we feel it’s necessary to take it a step further. We've some other ideas about how we can address some of the pain points in PvP related to cryos, namely with specific tweaks to caves and cryo-related behaviour around caves, however we're going to hold on those changes for now until we've gathered more data. We’ve identified a stall when dynamically downloading custom cosmetics, and it relates to the way that the mod plugins are being loaded in game. We’re looking into a solution to change how the mods are loaded and hope to have that resolved as soon as possible. In the interim you can eliminate the stalls by disabling “Dynamic Downloads” in the options menu. This will prevent the stalls, but also stop you from loading any custom cosmetics that are dynamically downloaded (ones you’ve manually installed should still work). We're working closely with our partners at Nitrado to make the official server saves from our sunsetted servers available soon. We know how much these worlds mean to you, and we're committed to helping preserve your hard-earned progress. Stay tuned for more updates! On April 8th, we deployed a new type of server across the network (for the various game types) that we refer to as "Expire" (which is what you can search for in the session filter). These servers will be online until 10 am PST / 1 pm EST on November 15th. We're preemptively using our allocation for Extinction to host some additional sessions that players can travel onto to farm, tame, and experience Aberration Gameplay. The same transfer restrictions apply in that you are only able to download your character, but you can freely take anything off. This is to help reduce load off some of the other servers, or provide players an option for those who just want to jump onto Aberration temporarily. Please note that these servers will no longer exist after 10 am PST / 1 pm EST on November 15th, so if you intend to use them, remember to transfer your items/creatures/characters off before that date, as nothing will be saved beyond that time period. We are beyond grateful for the incredible show of what can be achieved when gamers come together for a cause at this year's Extra Life Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser! Once again, your generosity has left us in awe, smashing our goal with an incredible $130,788 during our 24-hour streaming marathon. This leaves us at a total of $1,071,697.27 raised in 23,382 donations over a decade of ARK Extra Life events. Yes, it’s been 10 years, wow! Thank you to our wonderful gaming community for making this event another unforgettable success. Your generosity continues to make a profound difference in countless lives, your support means everything to us, and the kids! KensonPlays started following Monster Hunter Wilds - Are You Excited For It?!
-
Who's excited for Monster Hunter Wilds?? I certainly am! I preordered it within an hour of the announcement and played about 10 hours of the beta. I am very much looking forward to "Monster Hunter World 2," as some people call it! My Hunter and Palico are created and ready, and they will transfer to the full game when it drops on February 27/28th! I have requested the 28th off work for a "personal day" so I can get a 3-day weekend to get in on the hunts as soon as possible! I know @Cupara is also looking forward to it, too!

If the isle of Aeternum is known for anything, it is mysteries. Indeed, the island itself is the grandest mystery of all – located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, protected by the ever-churning Stormwall. While people from seemingly all ages and regions find their way here eventually, so too do many of the animals native to each corner of the Earth. At this point in time, it is highly likely that adventurers have encountered most of them. But there are rumors of another, more hidden creature. To whit, and of late, a certain Dr. Aenwyn has been raising much ado throughout the settlements (even as far north as the outposts of Shattered Mountain) about a “Grate Discovery To Rival All Known Discoverys”. Her atrocious spelling aside, the volume of her voice does make this pronouncement intriguing. A new animal? Here, on Aeternum? And yet, located exactly where…? Everywhere, she claims! She has supposedly seen not one hippopotamus, but rather myriad hippopotamuses of every shape and size roaming freely the island. The descriptions do make the mind boggle, question her sanity, and – dare we say – pique an interest most profoundly. Even saying the word feels a kind of magic after listening to one of her presentations. Hippopotamus. Hippopotamus! How utterly fascinating they must be! Within those five syllables is contained a bizarre and majestic world that may, perhaps, outshine what strange things have already been chronicled in Aeternum. Yet where there is new knowledge, there will surely be skepticism. Bystanders were quoted as having said, after leaving her talk in a huff when she refused to answer even basic questions from the audience: “That just sounds like a bear!” And: “We need proof!” As well as: “Is she actually even a doctor, does she have a valid certificate, and is it from an accredited institution at all?” Undeterred by dwindling listeners, including the occasional growing mob, Dr. Aenwyn continues onwards. You may spy her out in the fields of Everfall, down in the muck of Reekwater, or squatting atop a dune in Brimstone Sands with the most curiously pensive expression imaginable. She squints. She wonders. Is that an uncatalogued, as-yet undiscovered breed of hippopotamus over yonder? Off she dashes, pursuing her dream again with a passion that – if it cannot truly be understood – can certainly be appreciated. This will surely be a lifelong quest for the good doctor, but the mystery of hippos on Aeternum may never truly be solved in even our eternal lifetimes. The 'Hippo' MountWow, a real hippo! I can bearly believe we found one in just under 1,000 days. Continue your adventurers across Aeternum with your very own Hippo Burley mount, available now through the in-game Store. We had to ask ourselves how to take this fun idea and blend it into the style and look of New World: Aeternum, where as of yet, hippos do not exist. That kernel led us to have a little extra fun with this mount. If you decide to get it, I hope it will bring a smile to your face (as it does for us) when you're running around on a giant bear in a hippo costume. Concept and CreationWe were looking to hit something entertaining and ridiculous with the hippo bear design. We explored a few different stylized options before trying a couple costumed ideas, as we wanted to push the comedy and turn this item into something players would really get a kick out of putting on their mount. In the end we settled on a costume made of stuffed, baggy cloth stitched together, that would sit awkwardly on the bear but not obscure it. Where will your search for hippos take you next? Thanks for your support and we’ll see you in Aeternum.View the full article

Greetings, Adventurers! New World: Aeternum Update 1.1.2 downtime will begin at 11:00PM PT (7:00AM UTC) on November 5 and last approximately 2 hours. Baalphazu has been banished back to the darkness, marking the end of Nightveil Hallow. This update also includes rendering changes as well as fixes to some quests. Check out the full release notes, including other notable fixes, below. World Experience Fixed an issue that caused players to receive more PvP Experience than intended in the Cursed Mists zone. Fixed an issue that prevented progress in the Syndicate: Trial of the Scrivener quest and Faction rank advancement. Fixed an issue that caused several repeatable Expedition quests to not contribute to the "Repeat Offender" Season Journey task. Fixed an issue that caused players to phase into certain objects when accessing menus while vaulting.Rendering PC DX12 Beta Client: Added FSR native resolution TAA (Temporal Anti-Aliasing) only mode Added FSR sharpness control Improved the stability of our DX12 renderer FSR - Console/PC DX12: Improved visual quality of the FSR upscale Fixed rendering artifacts that could occur during FSR upscaling Fixed an issue in which emissive materials were not properly rendering, causing an unintended blue glow on several weapons. Fixed an issue in which some weapon effects would appear overly blown-out, especially in heavy combat scenarios. Fixed Depth-of-Field shimmering in certain lighting conditions (most notable during in-game cinematics).Notable Fixes Identified and fixed a rare crash that could occur if a player's client has a corrupted install which causes certain texture files to be invalid. In these cases we will instead render a basic white texture, allowing players to proceed into the game. Players who see this white texture should validate their installation files afterwards to try to correct any prior installation issues. Fixed an issue that prevented players on PC from progressing if they had Old Wounds ready for turn in before the release of New World: Aeternum. Fixed an issue that caused the 3v3 Arena end of match UI to not display properly. Thanks for your support! We’ll see you in Aeternum.View the full article

To learn more about the Armadoggo and all its special abilities make sure to watch our segment on the Armadoggo with Craig Brown! With a Bag attachment, Armadoggo can carry extra weight, freeing you up for other essentials. The Medkit offers emergency support, automatically healing you if your health drops too low, while Spikes and Extra Armor give Armadoggo some extra bite and protection in battle. Other attachments, like the Spyglass and Oxygen Tank, add further exploration support by granting enhanced vision and shared oxygen, while the Rolled Sleeping Bag provides insulation and a mobile resting spot. For those with a collectible flair, Armadoggo can also hold a Chibi Basket, allowing a second chibi to level alongside you. From extra storage to emergency healing and even distraction tactics, Armadoggo’s customizable gear allows it to support you in any situation, making it a loyal and versatile partner in survival. Hey hunters, The Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta Test is live now on Steam and runs until Sunday, November 3, 6.59pm PST / Monday, November 4, 2.59am GMT! Until the beta ends, you can head to the Forbidden Lands for an early taste of exploring and hunting your way through the game’s first locale, the Windward Plains. As we’re expecting hunters both experienced and new alike, we thought we’d put together a quick intro guide of the Open Beta Test to briefly cover some areas that may help you settle in a little bit quicker, but don’t worry, there’ll be plenty for you to discover in-game too! What’s in the Open Beta Test? The Open Beta Test consists of three main parts for you to play: Character Creation Story Trial Doshaguma HuntLet’s take a look in what the three segments above means for you! Character Creation Character creator enjoyers rejoice, in the beta you’ve got access to the full Monster Hunter Wilds Character Creation feature, letting you create and customise both your hunter and Palico! The best bit about having access to Character Creation during this period? You’ll be able to import your hunter and Palico’s Character Creation data into the full game when it launches! Story Trial The Story Trial gives you the opportunity to experience an early story quest from Monster Hunter Wilds, introducing you to the game’s rich and mysterious story, as well as important characters and more! Plus, it also serves up as a great way to introduce new players to both Monster Hunter Wilds, and the series as a whole, so if you’re brand new and this is your first Monster Hunter outing, welcome! You’ll be guided through the basics in an action packed introduction, getting you hunt ready, including meeting your Seikret mount companion, and helping you choose your first weapon with the guidance of Alma, your Handler! With 14 weapon types to choose from, feel free to take your time and find the one that really clicks with you! (Of course, this is in no way a permanent decision, you can change up what weapons you use whenever you like!) For more experienced hunters, there’s plenty for you here too. On top of what we’ve already shared about the story, it’s a great opportunity to regain the intuition you had during World / Rise, as well as getting to grips with Focus Mode! Doshaguma Hunt The Doshaguma Hunt gives you the opportunity to explore the Windward Plains and immerse yourself in the seamless hunting experience. You’ll be tasked with hunting an Alpha Doshaguma. This can be taken on solo, with the help of NPC Support Hunters, other players / friends, or a mix of players and NPC Support Hunters up to a party of 4. Hint: Doshaguma regularly form herds, meaning you’ll initially come up against a group of them! There are multiple ways to split an Alpha Doshaguma from the herd, meaning you won’t have to fight them all at once. One such way is to make use of the Large Dung Pods you’ll have access to, so don’t forget to use them! Of course, Doshaguma aren’t the only monsters roaming the plains. Balahara, Chatacabra and under certain conditions, the Apex of the Windward Plains, Rey Dau, will cross paths with you! You can also draw these monsters over to Doshaguma to invoke a Turf War and dish out extra damage. There’s also the option for you to go on and hunt these other monsters after taking down Doshaguma! On top of that, there’s an array of small monsters and endemic life existing in the locale, creating a living, breathing world that not only interacts with you, but also the environment and other creatures around it. By the way, when you successfully hunt Doshaguma, you can keep going! The seamless gameplay experience in Wilds allows you to continue hunting and exploring after a hunt, or you can choose to head back to base camp, or one of your nearby camps! Whichever you fancy at the time! Solo / Multiplayer in the Beta Monster Hunter Wilds is a game that can be fully enjoyed solo, multiplayer or a mix of both and that’s reflected in the Open Beta Test! Both the Story Trial and Doshaguma Hunt offer both a solo and multiplayer experience, with multiplayer opening up at a certain point in the Story Trial and being available immediately in the Doshaguma Hunt. The game scales to the amount of players / NPC hunters in your party too, so you’ll always get a satisfying and rewarding experience, no matter your party size! There’s also crossplay in the Open Beta Test (and full game), so if you want to team-up with friends or family on other platforms, you can! Hunting With Friends If you are looking to party up with friends in the Open Beta Test, this is how you can do it by starting a Link Party! Same platform: Communications > Invite a Friend -> select friend. Cross-platform: Link Party > Invite to Link Party > Hunter ID Search and enter their Hunter ID. You can then register each other as Hunter Friends for easy future invites! However, please note that friend registrations will not carry over into the full game. Hunting online in a Link Party: Post a quest by finding a target monster on the map, or by talking to Alma at Base Camp. Members can join your quest and depart, and you can communicate using party-only voice and text chat. The Windward Plains The Windward Plains is the first locale in Monster Hunter Wilds and the region that’s available to play in the Open Beta Test! You’ll find yourself in a diverse region made up of sandy deserts, swaying grasslands, twisting rock formations and other natural features to explore. However, you’re not alone in the Windward Plains! On top of the monsters and endemic life, you can also come across Kunafa Village and the people that call it home! You’ll also experience dynamically changing weather and seasons as you play, which not only alters the environment, but alters the living, breathing world too. Monsters, endemic life and the overall ecology of the area will change along with the environment. Here’s a summary of three environmental changes in the Windward Plains: Fallow This is a period of scarcity, with hungry predators roaming the land for food. Certain resources will be less common, and you should be wary of the aggression shown by monsters. Inclemency An ecology-altering event that sweeps in a raging storm to the locale. Lighting crashes down as the sky swells with power, bringing forth the apex predator of the Windward Plains, Rey Dau. Fun fact: The lightening strikes can be dangerous to hunter and monster alike, however there are ways to remain safe whilst out in the field! Plenty As the name suggests, this is a time of plenty! The environment is lush and life abundant. Endemic life and natural resources are commonplace as nature thrives. Hunt Ready! Before you head out into the hunt, we’ll quickly cover a few topics, both familiar and new, to give you the edge out in the wilds. Choosing / Swapping Your Weapon Finding and picking the weapons that best suit you is a fun and important choice! If you play through the Story Trial, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss weapons with Alma, your Handler, and she’ll ask you a few questions to help narrow down what might best suit you out of the 14 weapon types! You’ll then be able to try out some moves and combos on a barrel training dummy! If you head straight for the Doshaguma Hunt, you’ll find that you can equip two different weapons at once, a versatile new feature for Monster Hunter! Pop into your tent at the base camp and you’ll be able to select which two weapons you want to use. In the Open Beta Test, you can choose two weapons from the 14 available, so you can select two totally different weapon types, but in the full release retail version, you’ll also be able to choose two of the same weapon type. You can also change what weapons you’re using by returning to the base camp, or heading to any camps you’ve set-up out in the Windward Plains. If you’re new to Monster Hunter, don’t be afraid to experiment and try out any weapons that appeal to you, you never know which ones will end up being your favourite! From slower, heavy hitters, to faster more agile weapons, weapons with shields, transforming weapons, ranged weapons, weapons with counters, team buffs and even explosive shells! Naturally, for our returning, more experienced hunters, you likely know exactly what you want to try as you see how your favourite weapons feel and play with their new additions in Monster Hunter Wilds! When out in the field, you can swap weapons at any time by mounting your Seikret and pressing the appropriate button, nearly instantly swapping your equipped weapon! Eating a Meal Before you dive into a hunt, it’s well worth cooking a meal to give you some useful, temporary buffs! From increased Health and Stamina, to higher attack / defence and more, taking a moment to chow down on a warn dish will go a long way! You can cook meals almost anywhere too, including in your base camp, your camps out in the field or simply pop down your BBQ Grill when exploring the Windward Plains! You’ll then get the option to select rations, or specific ingredients, to put your meal together. What you choose has an impact too, from the type and strength of the buff you get, to how long it lasts. In Monster Hunter Wilds, food buffs last for as long as their timer dictates. Carting (your health being reduced to zero), even multiple times, won’t remove the food buff benefits! Focus Mode & Wounds Focus Mode is a new mechanic coming to Monster Hunter Wilds, giving you the ability to wield your weapons with increased precision, as well as allowing you the unleash powerful Focus Strike attacks! If you’re using a controller, holding Left Trigger will allow you to instantly shift into Focus Mode, giving you increased control over where you aim your strikes, even allowing adjustments to be made during some attacks! Whilst you’re in Focus Mode, you may notice the monster you’re hunting has some red areas with a light glow, these are wounds! Wounds occur when you deal enough damage to certain areas of a monster, making them even more vulnerable to attacks until they’re broken with enough damage. But you can also unleash a strong Focus Strike attack by pressing Right Bumper whilst you’re in Focus Mode, dealing high damage and instantly breaking the wound. We hope this feature not only allows newer players to settle into their weapon(s) of choice quicker, but also give more experienced players a way to elevate their playstyle to the next level! Seikret Your faithful mount, Seikret! A great way to navigate the Windward Plains, chase down fleeing monsters or swiftly get you out of a sticky situation! As mentioned earlier, you can also change between your two selected weapons whilst mounted! Seikret will always try and stay close, even during the heat of a ferocious hunt, so don’t be afraid to call on them! Whilst riding Seikret you can also attack, do a leaping dismount attack and also sharpen your weapon, use consumables and even your Hook Slinger to interact with your surroundings. But, there’s far more to Seikret than their application in combat, as mentioned they’re ideal for navigation and traversing the land, and at times, air! Seikret also has an inventory pouch, keeping hold of your Supply Items, delivered by Alma and more! When riding Seikret, you’ll have manual control of where you go, but by placing markers on your map, whether that’s a monster, physical location, or just anywhere you’d like to go, Seikret will automatically begin taking you there. You can quickly and easily switch between manual control and automatic whilst riding too, the choice is yours! And yes, in the full game you’ll be able to customise the appearance of your Seikret! How that works? Time will tell! Camps Discovered a particular area that you want to spend a lot of time in? Found yourself regularly returning to a certain location? Good news! Throughout the Windward Plains and other locales of Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll find locations that’ll allow you to put down a tent, creating a camp in that location! A fixed number of these camps can be set-up at a given time, providing you a place to change weapons and armour, cook meals in relative safety, restock, play with your Palico or just chill out! Be warned though, these camps are vulnerable to monster attack and can be destroyed if a monster comes to close. Yes, that includes when you’re in it too. Talk about a rude awakening! A Beginner’s Guide to Monster Hunter Wilds We’ve covered a few useful areas on this post, but there’s still lots for you to discover for yourself in the Open Beta Test! If you’d like to learn a little more before you dive in, you can check out our Beginner’s Guide to Monster Hunter Wilds, where your Handler, Alma, will help set the scene and give you a few pointers of her own! Open Beta Test Period & Reward As we highlighted at the start of this post, you’ve got from now until November 3, 6.59pm PST / Monday, November 4, 2.59am GMT to play the Open Beta Test! Everyone that plays during this time will also unlock a cute pendant that you can download in the full game! You’ll be able to decorate your weapon, or even pop it on Seikret! If you enjoy your time in the Open Beta Test, pre-orders are also available, getting you some fetching pre-order bonuses: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2246340/Monster_Hunter_Wilds/ Hunter Layered Armor: Guild Knight Set Talisman: Hope CharmPlus, if you played and have save data from Monster Hunter World and Iceborne save, you’ll get some extra gear for your Palico in the full game! That’s two sets of in-game Palico equipment and two Nameplates to use in your Hunter Profile. If you have just Monster Hunter World save data, you’ll get the equipment on the left, but having Iceborne save data as well will give you both! Full info on how this works can be found on our official website HERE. Quest Complete – We’ll see you next time! That wraps up today’s post, thank you for checking it out! We hope you all have a ton of fun in the Open Beta Test. As always, we greatly appreciate your feedback, especially so as this is a Beta Test period ahead of launch on February 28th, 2025. We’ll be going through Steam, our social media accounts other community spaces to gather your experiences and feedback, so please do let us know your thoughts, thank you! Filipe - Lead ProgrammerThis month I worked mainly on finishing the diet system. The stomach grows with the dinosaur and food no longer scales with the stomach. This doesn’t have much impact on smaller animals, but large ones that have quick moments of growth are forced to eat far more often. The combinations for diets were simplified but now they are not dependent on having active slots. The value of a nutrient increases the bonuses proportionally with them to a cap. Salt licks were adjusted to better help with vomit sickness but they also drain a nutrient while using them. Don’t forget to set your active nutrient in the Dinosaur Profile if you want to control which one it is. The diet and nutrition changes also allowed us to include the eggs in the diet system. Now players can grab eggs from female corpses that had gestated them before dying or steal eggs from the nests. Changes will be made to this in the future to account to specific “Egg Thief” dinosaurs but for now every carnivore can benefit from stealing those nutrient rich eggs from nests To conclude, some fun things for server owners. A lot more server configs were added to help modify gameplay experiences and admin commands were updated to be faster and more responsive. Mass Migration was also added as a config and more is coming soon with the introduction of “Nesting Patrol Zones” but otherwise the system is done. See you next time. Ariel - ProgrammerI’ve been working on some features you may have already seen for yourself in the horde test. Egg gestation has been added along with some adjustments to the nesting system. This required several changes, as previously you only laid a given number of eggs depending on your diet, but now you can choose how many you want and even lay them at different times. I also added scent support for them since they can now be picked up and eaten. I also continued my work on the maiasaura. Most abilities were actually quite simple to update to support the bipedal and quadrupedal states but out of all things grazing happened to cause the most problems. I ended up reworking the animation setup for that, but that’s something that had been planned anyway. Maiasaura now moves quite smoothly. amarok - ProgrammerI have been busy working on a new navigation system for fish which can translate for use with swimmers and eventually flyers. I’ve added the fish's capability to try to chase down and eat smaller players which you may have seen in the hordetest. With a lot of the back-end systems now completed my focus is AI. The base logic for most animals is completed with some big improvements to navigation and performance. The Pterodactylus and Compsognathus AI has been made using a new system which will allow larger hordes to spawn and interact with the world. Though these are WIP you will still see them showing up around the island. Each animal will get some improvements to their behavior now the foundation for base logic has been tested for performance and reliability. To close, some new RCON commands have been added for server owners that you can find in provided documentation. Bryan - AnimatorIt’s been rigging time, getting ready for the next round of animals to get back on their feet. Kentrosaurus is the first to use our new rig system that we’ll be using from here on out. As far as animation goes, I’ve been on Maiasaura and Allosaurus lately. Maia never really was a pushover in the old days but it’s got a new trick up its sleeve for Evrima. Best not to make mommy angry. The Allosaurus is getting new locomotion which is just about done for the adult and I’ll be working on the juvenile locomotion in November. Wedge - Sound DesignerThis month has just been more work on the Maiasaura. Along with polishing the adult calls I’ve also designed a set for its juvenile stage, maintaining the cute burbles and pops consistent from legacy. Additionally, I’ve completed the implementation for the calls, ensuring that the pitch and volume modulation as well as the dynamic mixing of vocal call layers over growth and other variables (such as when it loses its voice) all sound appropriate at every incremental stage. I’ve also gone through all the adult animations adding in footstep and foley sounds. Taking into account both its bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion meant double the number of places to sync. I’ve now started working on the vocal sounds for the rest of its animations, starting with its attacks. With varying directional attack animations based on the angle of attack, a few different attack vocals of different lengths are needed, providing a coherent yet natural variability to compliment the variety in the animations. hypno - QA LeadHey all! It’ll just be a short one for me on this devblog as QA have been working solely on bug testing both recent additions and some upcoming mechanics. Here are a few of the more interesting issues we encountered over the past month: As you are all probably aware by now, one of our recent additions was the inclusion of our first ever seasonal content. Of course this came with some interesting bugs, such as being able to court and nest with dead dinosaurs: Additionally, dead dinosaurs would leave behind some of their belongings if they entered spectator mode: We’ve been testing out some new Scavenger AI that have proven to be much more performance friendly and reliably spawning on corpses, though have had a plethora of issues in their development. Thankfully, you can expect these issues to be fixed for their release: Tenontosaurus had a fun gravity defying kick that set people up for combo damage instead of sending them away from a player: We also found the omniraptor decided it would also be a ghost for a build and disappear whenever it would latch on to a player: KissenKitten - ProducerHappy Halloween! October was an interesting month. A lot going on. There’s so many irons in the fire right now. And since I’m tired, I’d prefer to do more showing than telling. Creature side there’s Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Maiasaura, Allosaurus, Austroraptor and soon Kentrosaurus all being worked on in some capacity across varying departments. Their animations are either complete or nearing completion for all but kentrosaurus who is next in line, followed by baryonyx. The animation team has been doing an excellent job and stood up to the task I placed before them, which was to get the austroraptor animations complete in record time. The animal has land based movement, aquatic movement both above and below the surface of the water, and all that feather work. I am very proud of what we managed to accomplish with such a frankly annoying creature and I’m sure the entire animation team is as relieved to be bringing it to a close as I am. There are new AI additions coming too. Destined for a life of being fodder for hatchlings and juvenile carnivores, these small animals will be showing up in specific locations and be yet another element we’re incorporating to bring the whole island to life. Grasshoppers, rats, dragonflies, and lizards to name a few. Elders are looking pretty good. I’ve attached some images of adults and elder comparisons, some of which are already being moved into the game for current playables. I hope you all enjoyed the Halloween event and continue to have some fun with it. That’s all for this month. The next two months are gonna be here and gone before we know it so we haven’t a moment to spare. Catch you next time. Director’s CommentaryThe Migration Zone testing went well and I'm happy to say the game works with or without the settings enabled, as well as Diets/Buffs, Patrol Zones, and Mutations. Additional configurations were added for server owners to further customize the experience they wish to give players and rebalance settings. The User-Interface changes are rapidly coming to a close. It took a bit of time to figure out how to properly transition from an old retro style console interface to a sleek design in-game without it becoming jarring but I feel we've figured it out. I've attached a few previews of the layout approvals of the upcoming UI but the transition sequence is still too rough to display. The VFX of the menus can be toggled off and there will be a small color selection for menu color. VisualTech48 made some fantastic progress in everyone's favorite general underground transportation system. Many of you by now have seen the proto-entrances that exist on the island and I've attached some images of their upcoming replacement. Someone somewhere is asking about the vending machines and yes, they are temporary stand-ins because you know AE has only the finest liquid provisions to provide to their workers. Much like the Hubs, there will be a degree of variation among these that can allow various sections to branch off into other rooms, halls, or tunnels, including the elevator shaft. Coming shortly after these major connections are complete will be the destroyed tunnel variants that spill out into caverns and other internal environments. Certain lighting is temporary as we work on the power system and as always, be nice to the tyrannosaur. They're just visiting. Lastly, I’ll just fire off some things going into the next HordeTest with varying degrees of context. Thermal vents and wind currents! These can affect flying creatures by providing speed boosts and lift and no stamina cost to a player and slowing them if they fly against it. These airways are also customizable and can be set to be active during a specific time of day, if they are immune to or affected by weather states, or if they’re just permanently active. You can expect all those natural thermal vents that are active during the day will go away during heavy rain or storms, as well as varying wind currents that become active at night to help move our flight-capable population around. I know everyone is excited for the next animal and the Maiasaura will be stomping over that line for testing very soon. It will also be in one of if not the first HordeTest for the next patch. I don’t have additional information context for these but they’ll be there: Spawn Codes. Gastroliths. Nesting Zones. Replay Updates and Effects. Godspeed and see you on The Isle. - Don View the full article

Let's kick off discussions about Dinosaurs with a simple one. What is your favorite dinosaur, and why? I would have to say, easily, that this is my favorite dinosaur: And my reason for it being my favorite? It looks both cool, and odd, at the same time!

Download in full resolution Prepare to meet the Dreadmare, a legendary creature of myth and shadow. This fearsome mount, found on Scorched Earth and The Center, grants you command over dark magic, draining the life of foes, weakening defenses, and even veiling allies in a shroud of darkness. Take flight on this ominous steed and wield its unique powers to turn the tide in your favor. Embrace the shadows... Dreadmare awaits. Download in full resolution Species: Umbris phasmequester Time: Unknown Diet: Carrion Feeder Temperament: Aggressive near carcasses I’d have thought an apex predator like T. Rex or Giganotosaurus would be the scariest thing on the ARK, until I first saw this vision from a heavy metal album cover spread its wings. Dreadmare can induce an acute threat response in literally anything. All the better to scare away other scavengers from the dead meat it’s drawn to. Those wings can focus gusts to create pressure blasts at the point of impact. Dreadmare also has an uncanny way of disrupting a target’s healing abilities while boosting its own. And there’s no outnumbering this terror, since its dreadful aura seems to drain the will to live from everything around it. You aren’t going to break this beast the usual way. The only way to gain a Dreadmare’s respect is by killing it a few times. Yes, you read that right -- you will need to respawn one to fight again and again until you prove yourself worthy. Once you’ve won its favor, your Dreadmare will reveal its greatest ability: to tuck another of your war-beasts into a pocket dimension for later access. Soon you’ll be riding into battle on a shadowy pegasus that can bring along surprise backup! Greetings, Adventurers! From voiceovers (VO) to sound design, discover how the Audio Team designed Nightveil Hallow. Once you’ve learned more about the voice and sound effects behind Baalphazu, confront the Marquis of Terror in-game for event-specific rewards before Nightveil Hallow ends on November 5. VoiceoversSalvatoreCasting Baalphazu and Salvatore was rather unusual compared to how we typically handle that process. Starting with Salvatore, they wanted to have this voice pay homage to some of the great actors from the golden age of horror films like Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Lon Chaney. This became a rather challenging request to find just the right voice. After reviewing dozens of reels from voice actors, I was chatting with one of our wonderful directors. They shared a general joy and excitement for the character, suggested some folks, and then later that day sent me an email out of the blue. Attached was a recording of an excerpt from The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. Much to our delight, and from the initial confusion of “yes, that’s a perfect voice," to "if only we could find an actor to do something similar,” we had cast our Salvatore. We were sitting on pins and needles, nervous but excited during the first recording session. As soon as it started, the entire crew was grinning from ear to ear. A few of us couldn’t help but chime in during breaks and pauses to sing our praises about how he sounded just like one of those golden age actors. BaalphazuWe knew from a design perspective that Baalphazu was going to be really intense and vocally very straining. So, we wanted to make sure whoever we cast for the role could handle screeches, screams, growls and more. The voice behind Baalphazu is Molly Scarpine, an incredibly talented metal vocalist who just so happens to specialize in extreme creature vocals. Molly was recommended to us initially by our Director Maddie Stratton as a “hey, check out this vocalist and her band. They’re really cool.” After hearing Molly’s music, we knew we had to get her in for something awesome. Then this boss came around, handed to me as a lovely gift. Molly was such a wonderful person to record with and gave us a plethora of variations for each line. I just have this vivid memory of Molly shrugging and calling out that she’s doing great after being asked how she’s feeling, and then going in for the next take. Easily one of the coolest sessions I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending. Baalphazu Voice DesignHoliday content is always a lot of fun to work on, and I think Halloween might be my favorite. The dark and scary nature of the holiday opens up a huge amount of possibilities for sound design. You can push the envelope into weird and creative territories to enrich the experience. Starting with great source material makes the remainder of the process an absolute joy. The unique vocal tonalities that Molly can achieve, in addition to the raw emotion that comes through in the recording, gave Baalphazu their own unique voice, even before the VO design. We knew the voice needed to evoke terror, and strike fear into the hearts of all who inhabit the island. With that in mind, I started by splitting the voice into three separate channels for unique processing. The first layer was meant to provide clarity in the spoken line. I used very light pitch and delay processing to give it a bit of a larger than life feel, but was careful about going too far and making the lines unintelligible. This gave the voice an eerie, demonic doubling effect. The next two layers were where I wanted to take advantage of the strange nature of Halloween and push it into something weird, horrifying, and unique. I was inspired by a sound we all know and hate, nails on a chalkboard. I found that you can get similar, but unique results from sliding a shower ring across a metal rod. I took these unsettling sounds and used an envelope follower, which mirrored the amplitude of the VO lines, to bring that texture into the voice. The final layer was where I went nuts. I threw everything and the kitchen sink at it to see what would happen. The result ended up being a low-pitched layer with some aggressive modulation. I used a slight reversal effect along with a formant filter hooked up to an LFO to give a constant tonal shift that somewhat mimics a human voice. These three layers, along with the strong VO performance, gave Baalphazu an identity of their own. Baalphazu Sound EffectsAfter working with Molly’s vocals, the Audio Team had the opportunity to go into their own creative space and finish off the character’s sound scape with the sound effects (SFX). ViolinI started with something familiar to me, the violin. The amount of emotion and expressivity you can communicate through the violin is something I haven’t experienced with anything else. But… it’s also capable of producing some of the nastiest, most unsettling screeches and scrapes to ever pierce your ears. This was the starting point for Baalphazu’s base ability, the Wing Stab. The ability to control pitch and that nasty timbre allowed me to give the lead-up and execution of the attack the motion they needed. These recordings, along with the creaky, wooden branch foley for the wings and a splash of fire, gave this attack its voice. Chickering PianoContinuing my experimentation with musical instruments, I reached for a 1920s Chickering piano as source material for the Reap ability. During this attack, the ground is lit with a green flame, then Baalphazu pulls their challengers in close and summons rings of fire that damage all who are near. The piano is used in the lead-up to the pull, giving the players a tell that something is on the horizon. Spoons and StringsI rubbed a spoon across the bare piano strings in all different directions and found that the upward direction gave a great sense of tension and anticipation. The metal spoon scraping against the metal of the piano strings provided that discomforting signature that worked so well for this character. The piano mixed with elements of fire, thunder, chains, and the souls of the Netherworld beneath, convey the sheer terror that Baalphazu encapsulates. I had an amazing time working on all of the different aspects of Baalphazu. Each one introduced an opportunity to try something new, push the creative envelope, and come up with a unique sonic signature that fit with the character. The combination of deliberate casting, incredible performance, and the ability to explore new ideas created an environment for the team to flourish. These, along with a massive group effort from all the developers came together to create this great new experience. Thanks for your support! We’ll see you in the shadows of Aeternum.View the full article

Pack your cogs and get your Cosmos ready to explore! Unreal Engine 5.4 is being pushed back a little bit, but is still well underway. Before we determine a new launch timeframe, let’s give you a little background on this process in the form of an analogy. Let’s say you have a factory that bakes cakes with many specialized techniques that you designed. Now, this cake factory is a little dated. Fortunately for you, cake making techniques continue to improve, and new methodologies are available to enhance your cake. Seems pretty straightforward, right? But not exactly. You’re working with a live cake factory; you need to continue making cakes to feed your customers, so you cannot disrupt that process to integrate these improvements. However, you can dedicate a small team to make a new cake factory, based on the original, and incorporate the upgrades. After some time, the new cake factory has finished with the upgrades. Still, you notice that your specialized techniques that made your cake taste a certain way no longer work, so now you’ve got to spend time fixing all of that while still operating your old cake factory.. This is the stage we’re at. We’ve branched the codebase, completed the upgrade, and are now going through the time-consuming process of ensuring that everything works as expected; this doesn’t just include the old things that are essential to developing ARK and were custom-built but also making sure that the new improvements are functioning as expected within our custom codebase. This impacts how you experience the game (i.e., when we cook out the files, is the gameplay as we expect, are we noticing the performance improvements, has anything new broken?) and also how we experience the editor (are our tools functioning the way we expect them too, can level designers still create volumes, are blueprints cooking, etc.). So yeah, while we do want to move into the new cake factory, we’re still testing that all components of our cake can be made with the new factory tools and that the cake is still a cake, but better. It’s pretty lengthy and carries some risk. We could get through it quicker if we put more people onto it, but that adds more risk to the cake we’re giving people now (ASA) and we’ve got a lot of orders lined up for the rest of the year. So, what’s our new timeline? We believe the safest approach would be to release the engine upgrade to 5.4 (or maybe higher at that point) in Q1 next year. This allows our team to focus on the significant content milestones this year (Extinction, Events, and Wasteland War) and then gently move on to wrapping up the upgrade after the break. We’re really excited about the upgrade, not only because of the performance improvements but also because it gives us access to better and sharper tools to continue improving the quality of the game. It’s still coming, so hang in there! TLDR: Cake is on the way, coming to a bakery near you in Q1 2025. Happy 1-year Anniversary to ARK: Survival Ascended! Shapes in the mist! Shrieks in the night! The demon Baalphazu, Marquis of Terror, and his horde of ghoulish Pumpkinites are spreading a living nightmare across Aeternum. Aid Salvatore the Mad in his quest to banish these foul terrors and collect a bounty of Nightveil Hallow rewards. We spoke to the Design, Narrative, and AI Teams for insight into various aspects of the event. Let’s find out some of the tricks that brought you this Halloween treat. You’ll also get a glimpse at early Nightveil Hallow concept art from before Baalphazu could cast their first shadow over Aeternum. InspirationThe direction of Nightveil Hallow was greatly inspired by 80s horror movies, specifically the awesome creature-flicks and fun-spirited ‘schlocky’ tone of the era. As a Halloween and horror-fanatic, it was a blast to work with the team to mix all the pieces that make 80s horror so iconic, and present them within the realm of Aeternum. Baalphazu and his Pumpkinites convey a theme that should hopefully feel familiar to fans of the genre and season, while Salvatore is a classic throwback to the golden age of horror cinema icons. Event GoalsThe goal of every holiday event is to ensure it’s unmistakable to players that a special event is happening in Aeternum. With that, the playfully decorated settlements round out Nightveil Hallow. It is the team’s seal on our love letter to the spookiest time of year! References in the Event Shop Rewards The reverence Nightveil Hallow holds for the spooky season is most apparent in the Event Shop and incredible rewards players can earn during the event. I’m certain fans of the genre will pick up on the inspirations for a few of the items, but there’s one hidden-in-plain-sight reference I’m particularly curious if anyone will catch. The Creation of BaalphazuWhen conceiving the demon Baalphazu, we wanted to hint at the existence of other parallel worlds. The Netherworld is a mysterious realm of shadows and nightmares, where the dark figure of Lord Tenebrous rules over the Host, a collection of goblins, ghouls, and other terrors. Baalphazu is one of the Netherworld’s dread captains, eager to carry out the will of his twisted master by spreading fear throughout the island of immortals. Naming BaalphazuWe tossed a few names around when conceiving this demon. When it comes to New World, our goal is to have creatures and NPCs that are familiar but still uniquely Aeternum. I was fond of the name ‘Belphegor’ while another developer favored ‘Pazuzu’ so it’s easy to see how we settled on Baalphazu. Pumpkinites Any new holiday event starts with establishing the "reason for the season," or the major shift that causes all of the associated festivities. The conceptualization of the Pumpkinites was that first step toward developing the overall framework of Nightveil Hallow. The idea of monstrous pumpkin creatures running amok across Aeternum was too fun to pass on, and the Concept/AI Teams did a killer job developing each one to convey their own sense of personality and purpose. Of the bunch, the Pumpklin is the one I’d consider to be the mascot of the event, as it’s a direct homage to the “small creature” horror films of the 80s. I can totally see this little guy standing claw-to-claw against the Critters. PumpklinsDespite being the smallest and most fodder creature of the bunch, the Pumpklins were a deceivingly intricate mob to create, as they are vital to defeating Baalphazu. The concept of defeating an enemy and picking up its head to throw at others was as wild to pitch as it was to develop. A lot of new tech had to be created and there were many moving parts. It was a cross-departmental effort. Everyone involved with the process did such an amazing job, it’s immensely satisfying mowing them down by the dozens and seeing their heads fly across the battlefield. I’m incredibly excited the Pumpklin is now a permanent fixture of Aeternum, and can’t wait to see what other shenanigans it can get itself into. Baalphazu Boss Fight Controlled chaos is how I’d best describe the primary creative design pillar of the fight. It’s fast and hectic, but includes a large boss space to create a more epic atmosphere in two ways — many players can participate without feeling too crowded, and Baalphazu and the Pumpkinites have a lot of room to move. I love how Baalphazu's dialogue and taunts were worked so heavily into the flow of the fight to convey both narrative and phase transitions to players. If I had to pick one specific moment of the Baalphazu fight I’m particularly pleased with (aside from everything), the presentation and performance of the final death explosion completely nailed the goal of an 80s cult horror villain death. It is a perfect celebratory moment to close out the encounter. Boss Design Baalphazu was designed to make sure any player can succeed without having to play a specific role or weapon. Accessibility is key for a spooky good time. A lot of effort went into making sure the boss and the supporting cast worked harmoniously with each other. For example, the monster attacks apply healing debuffs, but offer healing when defeated. Vital values were pushed to the absurd as we explored what an open-world boss could look like in New World. This "more is better" approach includes the bonus damage players can deal when Baalphazu becomes staggered. There’s something so satisfying about seeing big numbers! I even secretly snuck in a small health buff before we locked down the boss for release, but watching the boss melt before the might of the players indicates that I should have applied "more is better"... more. Appearance Since the Pumpkinites lean into the more schlocky, playful side of 80s horror, we created a darker and more sinister look for Baalphazu to add some levity to the event. They were meant to be a trickster figure with ties to mysterious ancient gods, so we drew a lot from folk horror. Their hooded, partially obscured face bears a terrifying grin, leaning into that trickster archetype. We went through tons of iterations for different looks and body types, but ultimately settled on branch-like wings. Reminiscent of their pumpkin underlings, the wings give the impression of gnarled roots ripped out of the ground. For the rest of Baalphazu's design, we wanted them to look otherworldly — totally different than anything else we’ve seen in Aeternum so far. They look almost as if carved from clay, beautiful but disturbing at the same time. Ultimately their design captured exactly what we wanted for this event, dark and unsettling, with a hint of Halloween fun. The New Throwable Object Mechanic What’s more appropriate for the season than throwing fiery pumpkin heads? This mechanic creates an ebb and flow to the boss that allows players of a wide-range of skill and levels to participate in meaningful ways. Developing the logistics of this mechanic and integrating it into the chaos of the fight presented an interesting challenge. We had to ensure the throwable pumpkins were visible and easily learnable. They also had to feel predictable in terms of trajectory and destination. It’s been immensely gratifying watching playthroughs and seeing the ‘aha’ moment when this mechanic clicks with players.
